Grandma’s Irish Soda Bread

Nothing beats the aroma of freshly baked Irish Soda Bread straight from the oven! Perfect for St. Patrick’s Day or any day you crave a slice of comfort. 🍞💚

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 4 tablespoons white sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 egg
  • 3/4 cup raisins

Directions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a round cake pan or cast iron skillet.
  2. In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Cut in the softened butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. In a separate bowl, beat the egg with buttermilk, then add to the flour mixture. Stir in the raisins.
  5. Knead the dough lightly (do not over-knead), then shape it into a round loaf. Place the loaf in the prepared pan or skillet.
  6. With a sharp knife, make an X across the top of the loaf.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 45 to 50 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  8. Let it cool on a wire rack before slicing.
